LEEDS FASHION SHOW - article by rachael divers for FAB magazine

FAB Spotlight: Fashion Designer Katie Newsam – by Rachael Divers October 16, 2011
It’s nearing to 6pm on a Saturday night and I’m sat at home in front of a roaring fire waiting to make my call to Katie Newsam, the designer behind the K N Fashion brand. Based in South Yorkshire and having trained at the University of Lincoln, the freelance designer now holds a degree in fashion design and a wealth of experience within design and pattern cutting. The modest designer has showcased at catwalk shows up and down the country, most recently at the Dress Me Beautiful Leeds Fashion Show last night at the Leeds City Museum.

Previous collections saw ”Toxic Mechanics” be shown at the Valmont Club in Chelsea and in September 2010 her “Tribe” collection was shown at the IHEARTFASHION show in Busch Hall, London. The Urban Music Awards also asked Katie to headline their internationally broadcast fashion show with both collections, to which she jumped at the opportunity. Katie has also headlined at Brighton Fashion Week with her “Candied Taunt” collection for the Brighton Frocks instalment of the show. Currently, she is selling her clothes with Fashion Pony – an online boutique which brings together limited edition pieces from innovative and independent labels – and working as a designer and seamstress at Moo Designs.

Her latest collection has seen her collaborate with illustrator, Amber Dickinson, the power behind the newly formed Wyart company. Amber specialises in textile design and illustration and came up with the print design for the K N Fashion most recent collection, “Hunters Calibre” for Autumn/Winter 2011.

As I sit and make my telephone call to Miss Newsam, it’s clear from her tone that the first excitement she felt about fashion is still present: “Fashion is a statement of life for me. It defines who I am and where I want to be” the young designer tells me, I couldn’t possibly love anything else…” For the aspiring designer, fashion is the be all and end all of her life. “Forget men…no time for that drama!” Katie laughs down the line. And it’s a good job the designer has that attitude too – with the ferocious fashion competition always upping the ante, it’s important to never take your eye off the ball.

Still chatting away on the phone, I ask Katie about her most recent collection, “Hunters Calibre”, and where her inspiration came from: “The collection takes inspiration from the English equestrian dating back to the edwarian period. I exagerate basic shapes and lines and add a new depth and sophistication with a hint of androgyny.” This much is clear after viewing the collection for myself last night – printed fabrics in earthy colours were the key to the colour palette and Katie tells me that the main accessories in the collection are the dickie bow and the riding style cap. “They are a strong statement for both the man and the woman” Katie explains, “the first part of the collection is more ready-to-wear peices that symbolise the hunt, but the follow up to this is more avante garde pieces that symbolise the “trohpy hunter.” With a contrast in shapes and fabrics to the first collection, this uses more luxurious colours and heavily textured fabrics. The collection also features menswear for the first time which the young designer was extremely nervous about, ”I didn’t have a male to fit to really so it was pretty challenging to get the proportions right. I was worried the menswear wouldn’t be well received, but it seemed to go down quite well. I’m pleased with the collection and love the array of textures I got to use this time around.”

The designer need not have worried about her recent collection – from my privileged spot at the foot of the Leeds Fashion Show catwalk, I got the full effect of the crowds’ delight as Katies’ models strutted their stuff down the spotlit runway to cheers of pure fashionable delight. And for Miss Newsam, this is just the beginning. Wrapping up our phonecall, Katie tells me how happy she feels that her collection was welcomed and it is clear that the designer is both humble and proud of her work.

“Hunters Calibre” will grace more catwalks in the coming weeks as Katie exhibits at Leeds Fashion Rocks and Liverpool Fashion Week.
